VOC Testing for Healthier Buildings

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that easily become airborne gases — often invisible, but they can build up in enclosed spaces like offices, schools, retail stores, or multi-tenant buildings.

Full Spectrum Environmental’s Commercial VOC Testing services help you detect, measure, and understand VOC levels so you can maintain safe indoor air, meet industry standards, and respond to occupant complaints with real data.

What Are VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)?

VOCs are a broad group of carbon-based chemicals that evaporate at room temperature. Many everyday building materials and products release VOCs into the air through a process known as off-gassing.

Common sources of VOCs in commercial spaces:

How To Test for VOCs

Two methods for testing VOCs in commercial settings:

VOC Screening (PID)

A Photoionization Detector (PID) is a handheld instrument that measures Total VOCs (TVOCs) in real time. This is the fastest, most cost-effective way to check if there’s an elevated VOC level indoors.

A PID VOC screening helps you decide whether more advanced testing is needed.

VOC Testing (TO-15)

When a PID shows high readings or if you need accurate lab results, we recommend EPA Method TO-15. This gold-standard process involves:

TO-15 testing provides a certified breakdown of which VOCs are present and in what concentrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemicals that evaporate easily into ambient air. Many building materials, carpets, paints, and cleaning products release VOCs over time. Testing helps detect hidden buildup that can affect air quality, health, and compliance.

A PID is ideal for quick, real-time VOC readings if you suspect off-gassing from new materials or suspect odors. TO-15 is the gold standard when you need certified lab results for legal, insurance, or regulatory documentation.

A PID screening can be done in just a few hours during a site visit, with instant results. TO-15 testing takes longer — sampling can run 8 to 24 hours, with lab results typically back in 5–10 business days.

We recommend VOC testing for offices, schools, healthcare facilities, retail stores, or any property that’s been recently renovated, repainted, carpeted, or insulated with spray foam.

If testing shows elevated VOCs, we’ll explain possible sources and practical ways to improve ventilation or isolate problem areas.
